Day 4: Louvre Museum & Free time on Les Champs Elysées

Once the palace of kings, the Louvre has been intimately linked to the history of France for eight centuries. Conceived from its creation in 1793 as a universal museum, its collections, which are among the finest in the world, span several millennia and a territory that stretches from America to the frontiers of Asia. As a universal museum, the Louvre houses eight departments. Egyptian Antiquities, Oriental Antiquities and Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities rub shoulders with more modern collections such as those in the Paintings, Sculptures, Works of Art, Graphic Arts and Islamic Arts departments. In all, almost 33,000 works are on display, including such world-famous masterpieces as the Victory of Samothrace, the Crouching Scribe, the Winged Bulls of Khorsabad, the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's Slaves and the Napoleon III Apartments. A ninth department, devoted to the arts of Byzantium and Eastern Christendom, is currently being created and will open in 2025.
